Google in China: degrees of evil January 26, 2006
Posted by myredstar in news.2 comments
So it has happened. Google has caved in. It has agreed to actively censor a new Chinese-language search service that will be housed on computer servers inside the PRC.
Obviously this contradicts its stated desire to make information freely available to everybody on the planet, and it contradicts its mission statement: “don’t be evil.”‘ As Mike Langberg at the San Jose Mercury News puts it: their revised motto should now read “don’t be evil more than necessary.”
Everybody and their dog is reporting on this new development, and I’ve even been quoted. But as of this writing the new Google.cn service has not actually gone live (right now when you type…
danwei: Focus Media gobbles up its rivals January 9, 2006
Posted by myredstar in news.
add a commentFocus Media, the company that controls the majority of flat-panel TV displays that show advertisements in office buildings in Chinese cities, has signed a contract to buy its rival Target Media. This comes after Focus Media’s acquisition of Framedia which has a network of print posters for advertising use inside elevators and other places in office and residential complexes.
Like outdoor advertising, it is impossible to avoid the flat-panel screens if you live in Chinese cities. In a fragmenting media environment, this means that more and more advertisers are going to use such channels. The NASDAQ-listed Focus Media is therefore probably one of the safest investments in the Chinese advertising and media industries.

add a commentmonday is the final day of tying up the various loose ends before we go to print. thanks to all contributors and staff for another ‘miracle’ well done. special thanks to ian and teddy for keeping the faith (and very very long hours).
we had to trim down to 24 pages for the magazine section due to deadlines and a skeleton staff, but what’s left is a real smashing and good, if perhaps only one toilet session short, read. watch for the distinctive ‘狗’ on the cover, hitting the streets this week!

add a commentChinese journalist Anti was the most vocal blogger writing against the recent shenanigans at The Beijing News. His uncompromising tone freaked out the spineless content monitors at MSN Spaces, where his blog was hosted. So they deleted the entire blog.
Rebecca MacKinnon has written a review of the whole case: Microsoft takes down Chinese blogger.
In the meantime, Anti has set up his blog again at Blog City, which is blocked in China, but the RSS feed for the site works just fine. In China you can also see the mirror site put up by ESWN. You can subscribe to an email version by writing to antisblog@gmail.com. He…
danwei: 2006 is going to be great year for Chinese media January 4, 2006
Posted by myredstar in news.
add a commentThere’s not going to be a revolution. Mass media will not be any less tightly controlled than in 2005. In fact, newspapers and TV stations are probably going to have greater difficulties remaining independent from central government interference than in 2005.
But look at what has been happening in the past few months:
- The number of blogs is increasing every day, and many of them are written by professional journalists and writers.
- Bloggers are shooting movies and organizing screenings, which is noteworthy when you consider that just a few years ago, art exhibitions without official backing were regularly shut down by the cops.
- Thanks to the Internet, news of riots and violent confrontations between local authorities and peasants…

When Danwei recently caught up with Jo Lusby, she was just beginning to settle down after a hectic China tour with the ex-governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten. These days, however, such things — four cities in five days in a book tour which Patten described as ‘more exhausting than my election campaign’ — hardly faze Jo. High up in her bright, book-strewn SOHO office, stepping over an enormous box filled with gifts presented to Lord Patten on his latest China visit, Jo is relaxed, funny and obviously delighted with…
